Grameenphone and Robi Kick Off First Commercial 5G in Bangladesh
Expansion of 5G services will depend on customer experience and device compatibility.
Both GP and Robi have plans to expand their 5G network coverage across Bangladesh. However, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) raised the concern that they have fallen short of the fiber optic infrastructure, which is required to cover the 5G network nationwide.
Another problem is the unavailability of 5G-supported devices in many parts of Bangladesh.
Robi inaugurated 5G services at their Tejgaon head office. On the other hand, Grameenphone's CEO, Yasir Azman, appeared on a Facebook post announcing this big achievement. He said that the rollout is a major step towards a "Smart Bangladesh," offering faster and more reliable connectivity, while thanking the government and BTRC for their support.
How are mobile operators pricing the 5G network compared to 4G?
Mobile operators in Bangladesh are offering 5G services at the same price as existing 4G packages. For example, Robi has explicitly stated that 5G pricing aligns with 4G rates to ensure accessibility while expanding coverage. However, users must have a 5G-supported device in order to utilize the 5G network.
What areas will have 5G coverage in Bangladesh?
As of now, 5G networks are available in certain divisional cities in Bangladesh. Grameenphone has rolled out 5G in eight divisional cities, while Robi has introduced it in three cities.
